I’ve Been Here Before: The Conflict Between Purpose and Provision
“A good man leaves an inheritance for his children’s children.”
I’ve been here before – at the edge of a promise,
Telling God I’d walk straight this time,
Asking not for riches, but for clarity.
Not starving, not rich – just… aware.
Aware of my inconsistency, my wandering.
I want to be good.
But I have danced with the world’s rhythm too often.
They say a good man leaves something behind —
Land, name, legacy.
But doesn’t that demand money?
Doesn’t inheritance require wealth?
If so, then is chasing wealth a holy thing?
Or am I fooling myself trying to be righteous with ambition in my chest?
I wrestle with the line.
Legal or illegal, money corrupts if the heart is unguarded.
Even pure gain can turn greedy in impure hands.
So what makes a good man?
Is it the vaults he fills, or the values he plants?
Maybe being a good man
Isn’t just about what I leave behind,
But who I am – while I’m still here.

I believe you’ve captured something powerful here: legacy is about who we are, not just what we leave behind. While Proverbs 13:22 says “a good man leaves an inheritance for his children’s children,” that inheritance isn’t only financial—it’s values, character, and purpose.
ReplyDeleteStill, it’s not wrong to seek increase and wealth. Deuteronomy 8:18 reminds us that God gives us the power to create wealth—not for self-glory, but to fulfill His purpose through us.
I’ve come to realise that chasing riches without purpose leaves us empty. But when we pursue purpose with wisdom and a heart aligned with God, the wealth we gather becomes a tool for impact.
It’s not either/or. It’s both—and. Purpose and provision. Righteousness and resource. Legacy and a life well-lived, and I pray that God will enrich you with both in Jesus name.
Thank you for writing this—it’s the kind of reflection we need more of.
